Our first experience conducting a mihi whakatau went really well. As this was Mandy's first public speech in te reo as head teacher, nerves were high, however everything went smoothly.
We respected children's choices to participate if they wanted to...some children were feeling a bit shy in front of a fairly large crowd!
Bronwyn our senior teacher came as support which was well received and appreciated. We had lots of support from parents and whanau. We received encouraging feedback from parents who were very impressed with their children's skills at singing waiata. And thanks so much for these words of encouragement, we really appreciate it!
Our new teacher was supported by her family which was commented on by several of our parents as being a particularly nice touch. It was a really nice way to foster a sense of belonging with our new teacher and we were really happy with how it all went. With all our nerves we forgot to remind children to hongi hariru (which we had practiced on Friday)...however some children remembered on their own giving a handshake and welcome to Rowan. Overall a great first experience.
PS Thanks goes to Hannah's mum for the video footage and photos...awesome!
