Gardening...popular with the young crowd

At Bream Bay kindergarten teachers work hard to situate children at the centre of curriculum design and planning.  One way we do this is by simply asking children "If you could learn anything, what would you choose?"

With time to think it through, Asher responded today with an enthusiastic...

"We could grow some plants!  Parsley and vegetables.  Planting strawberries and planting strawberry flowers cause I love them.  To grow seeds...pineapple, water melon, apple and jam...they are yummy" said Asher.

Great ideas have wings and gardening has proven to be very popular with the young crowd...thanks Asher for the great idea!

First job - prepare the soil.

This involves a whole lot of team work to move the bags of compost to the garden.

Compost is heavy, team work makes the dream work!

Next job involves digging out weeds, adding compost and turning over the soil

"Aww digging is hard work, I think I just want to do the eating bit" said Asher.

Hahahaha...you and me both Asher!

Finding worms...good!

Finding snails...not so good!
Although Max, Ayden and Jericho thinks it's okay.

Planting time...Lachlan really enjoys this part.

The glory of gardening: hands in the dirt, head in the sun, heart with nature. To nurture a garden is to feed not just the body, but the soul.
— Alfred Austin

Watering in...

The maintenance crew...

He waka eke noa,
We are all in this together

Poipoia te kākano kia puāwai,
Nurture the seed and it will blossom

We're excited to see how our garden grows!

"We did hard work ah Tania" said Lachlan
with a big smile on his face.
You sure did Lachlan, you all worked really hard!
And what an awesome job you've done,
ka pai tamariki!
